On the road
The route from Amsterdam to Antwerp
We leave Amsterdam on the A2 towards Utrecht, take the A27 south past Gorinchem to Breda, and then the A16 to the Belgian border, where the road continues as the E19 to Antwerp. When the A27 is slow, the alternative runs past Rotterdam and over the Moerdijk bridge on the A16. Neither route has tolls on the way into the city centre.
Antwerp itself is where the time goes. The ring road around the city is one of the most congested in Belgium, and at peak times the last 10 km can add 20–40 minutes.
Border, ID and stops
The Netherlands and Belgium are both in the Schengen area. There is no passport control at the border; most passengers only notice the road signs change language. Carry a passport or ID card anyway. Both countries carry out occasional checks near the border, and Belgian hotels ask for ID at check-in.
Two hours is long enough to want a coffee. Ask the chauffeur and we stop at a service area on the A16 or E19.
Timing and rush hour
| When | Typical drive time |
|---|---|
| Early morning, before 07:00 | 1h55–2h10 |
| Daytime, weekends | 2h–2h20 |
| Leaving in the weekday rush, 07:00–09:00 or 16:00–18:00 | 2h40–3h15 |
The slow points are leaving Amsterdam on the A10 and A2, and the Antwerp ring at the other end. For a 10:00 meeting in Antwerp we would leave Amsterdam at 07:00. The price stays the same if traffic is bad.
Train or private transfer to Antwerp?
The Eurostar (formerly Thalys) runs from Amsterdam Centraal to Antwerpen-Centraal in about 1 hour 20 minutes. The cheaper Intercity to Brussels stops in Antwerp after roughly 2 hours. Antwerpen-Centraal is right next to the diamond district, so for one person with a small bag the train is hard to argue with.
The car makes sense when the address is not near either station, when you travel with three or more people, or when you want to work or sleep without changing anything. In a V-Class with 6 passengers, the fixed price comes to about €88 per person, door to door, with all the luggage you need.
Pick-up in Amsterdam, drop-off in Antwerp
We collect you at your hotel, office or home anywhere in Amsterdam. The chauffeur arrives a few minutes early and waits 15 minutes free; after that, waiting costs €25 per started 15 minutes. If you are flying into Schiphol and going straight on to Antwerp, tell us when you book and we meet you at arrivals instead.
In Antwerp, the streets around the diamond district have security and limited stopping space. Give us the exact building and we drop you as close as the street allows. For the port, send the company name and the gate, because some terminals are a long way from the city centre.
