On the road
The route from Schiphol to Rotterdam
The usual route is the A4 south past Leiden and The Hague, then the A13 past Delft into the north of Rotterdam. Since the A4 was extended between Delft and Schiedam, there is a second option: stay on the A4 and come into the city from the west. When the A13 is jammed, that is often quicker for Erasmus MC, Schiedam and the port.
Rotterdam is spread out, and the address matters more than in Amsterdam. Rotterdam Centraal and the Markthal are in the centre. Kop van Zuid, with the Wilhelminapier and Hotel New York, is across the Erasmus Bridge. Ahoy is further south. The port runs about 40 km west to the Maasvlakte.
Timing and rush hour
| When | Typical drive time |
|---|---|
| Night and early morning | 40–45 min |
| Daytime, weekends | 45–60 min |
| Weekday rush 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–18:30 | 70–90 min |
There are two slow points: the A4 around Leiden, and the A13 between Delft and Overschie. On a bad weekday afternoon the trip can take an hour and a half. The price is fixed, so the traffic costs you time, not money.
Concert nights at Ahoy are a separate case. The roads around the venue fill up in the hour before the doors open, so for an evening show we aim to arrive 30 minutes earlier than you would think.
Train or private transfer to Rotterdam?
The Intercity Direct from Schiphol to Rotterdam Centraal takes about 27 minutes on the high-speed line, with a small supplement on the ticket. No car beats that. If you stay next to Rotterdam Centraal and carry one bag, take the train.
For everything else, add the last leg. Kop van Zuid, Ahoy, Erasmus MC or a port office means a metro, tram or taxi at the Rotterdam end, with your luggage. A metered taxi over 63 km adds up quickly, and you only know the fare at the end.
The car is the better choice for groups, for crews with equipment in a Sprinter, for late arrivals when trains run less often, and for anyone who wants to make calls on the way. The S-Class is quiet enough to work in.
Pick-up at Schiphol, drop-off in Rotterdam
Your chauffeur waits at the Meeting Point in Schiphol Plaza with a name sign. We track the flight, and 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free.
Port terminals and offices on the Maasvlakte often require registration at the gate. Send us the company name and the gate address, and we will check in advance how close the car can get. Addresses that far west are priced separately; ask for a quote.
For the return to Schiphol, a pick-up three hours before a European departure is sensible in the morning rush. At other times, two and a half hours is enough.
